Filming in Saudi Arabia: The Equipment Setup That Actually Works
Saudi Arabia is one of the fastest-moving production markets right now. Budgets are real, timelines are tight, and the visual standard brands expect has gone up sharply. If you are planning a commercial shoot in Riyadh or evaluating a local production partner, here is what the setup looks like when it works.
The Riyadh light problem
Shooting in KSA means dealing with light that does not behave the way it does in Europe. Direct sun is harsh past 8am. Golden hour is short and early. Interiors, when air conditioning is running at full power, create condensation on lenses if you move equipment from outside to inside too fast.
The productions that get it right always bring their own strobe power. Profoto systems, specifically the B10X and Pro-11, have become the standard for location work in Riyadh because they handle the ambient compensation without making the setup enormous. Renting locally is possible but availability for premium units is inconsistent. The safest move for a high-stakes shoot is to bring the key grip kit and source only the heavy, bulky items like stands, sandbags, and cables locally.
Camera package
For brand campaigns in the region, RED Monstro and ARRI Alexa Mini LV remain the dominant choices. The reasoning is practical: color science holds in extreme contrast conditions, and the production houses here are experienced with both platforms. Sony VENICE 2 is gaining ground on fashion work where the sensor latitude matters for darker skin tones in direct sun.
If the budget is tighter or the format is social-first, BMPCC 6K Pro setups are increasingly common. Paired with the right glass they deliver a result that works for brand content without the logistics overhead of a full cinema rig.
Crew structure
A working commercial crew in Riyadh typically runs leaner than a comparable shoot in Madrid or Paris. The director, DOP, and a small core team fly in. Local production coordinators, fixers, and support crew are essential. They handle permits, location logistics, and anything that requires Arabic on the ground.
Permit timelines have improved significantly since 2023. The Saudi Film Commission has streamlined the process for approved production companies, but you still need to factor two to three weeks minimum for location permits in central Riyadh or heritage sites.
